Best Practice – II:
Title of the Practice: Inter Professional Learning (IPL)
Interprofessional Learning (IPL) fosters collaborative practices among healthcare professionals to improve patient care. It promotes understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and expertise of different healthcare professionals, enhancing respect and effective delegation.
Objectives of the Practice: To –
- Explore the concept of positionality in relation to professional identity.
- Explain one’s own professional role and responsibilities in clinical cases.
- Reflect on the roles of other healthcare professionals within an interprofessional team.
- Recognize challenges and strengths of team members in clinical cases.
- Facilitate continuous learning and professional growth through diverse perspectives.
- Develop the ability to approach complex patient care issues from multiple viewpoints.
- Foster an environment that leads to better patient outcomes through coordinated care.
Context: To meet student needs and expectations, IPL emphasizes learning through interactions with peers, mentors, and colleagues. It enhances problem-solving and critical thinking, fosters growth through feedback, and provides mentorship. Social learning through observation and imitation, effective conflict resolution, and engagement with diverse perspectives build cultural competence. These elements create a dynamic and supportive educational environment, enhancing both academic and social outcomes.
The Practice: The institution’s IPL system enhances learning through collaboration among healthcare professionals. Various health sciences departments work together to analyse topics from their specific perspectives. IPL sessions are held every fourth Saturday, featuring interdisciplinary presentations:
- Pharmacy students present from a pharmaceutical perspective using PowerPoint.
- Nursing and physiotherapy students from other institutions provide insights from their fields.
Participants register via Google Forms, streamlining the process and collecting essential information. This aids in tailoring content to the audience’s needs and ensures efficient organization. After each session, students complete a questionnaire to provide feedback, assess effectiveness, and suggest improvements. This feedback is crucial for refining the program and meeting students’ learning needs.
Evidence of Success:
- Positive Student Feedback: Surveys show high satisfaction rates and improved collaborative skills.
- Improved Academic Performance: Comparative analysis indicates better problem-solving abilities and critical thinking in exams and assessments.
- Enhanced Engagement: Faculty observations report increased student participation and a deeper understanding of healthcare roles.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required: Challenges include scheduling conflicts, varying student engagement levels, and technological issues with online presentations. Some students struggle with the collaborative format. Resources needed to address these issues include enhanced scheduling tools, engagement strategies, robust technical support, faculty training on interprofessional education, and additional funding for interactive learning materials and technological upgrades.
By addressing these challenges and leveraging necessary resources, the SCP aims to ensure the program’s success and sustainability, ultimately fostering a more collaborative and effective healthcare environment.
